Under the umbrella of Pakistan Army, FWO launch laudable environmental
move by planting trees along its assigned motorways under the title of, “Green Motorway Initiative (GMI)” in 2019 to transform the belts along motorways to green belts. The idea was conceived to address the environmental degradation through increasing transport systems and developing industrial economic zone along motorways, FWO’s GMI was first and unique project of country which demonstrates the efforts of FWO.
Pakistan is amongst seven most vulnerable countries with the effect of climate change with sparse forest cover of less than 2%. The undesirable phenomenon spells daunting prospects for country, such as extreme weather, shrinking fresh water resources, increased air pollution and greenhouse gas emission. Despite the long list of the benefits of roadside tree plantation, this practice has not been widely adopted in Pakistan. In 2019, MORE under the umbrella of FWO, took an initiative to carryout plantation in loops of interchanges and along ROW of Motorway M-2 by using integral resources for this noble cause. This plantation drive was named as GMI.The diversity and fertility of land supports and feasible to grow various kind of species of plants and trees. GMI was conceived to address the environmental degradation, eco system and crippling biotic conditions of the rapidly increasing transport system on Motorways. FWO initially planted 415,000 plants on barren land along roadside on different motorways of Pakistan including M-2. The initiative encompasses planting and nurturing approx 8.2 lacs plants along motorway on various projects. On Motorway M-2, 272,000 plants were initially planted with the target of planting 600,000. Around 160,665 plants were planted on Motorway M-2 with the progress rate of 46% (Forty Six Percent).
